Silicon slag is a by-product of smelting metallic silicon or ferrosilicon. It floats to the surface of the molten charge as a scum and still carries a meaningful amount of recoverable silicon. That residual silicon is why it is not treated as waste. For many steel mills and foundries, it is a practical, lower-cost raw material.
Silicon slag comes in several forms depending on its origin. The most common are industrial silicon slag, solar silicon slag, and semiconductor silicon slag. Each has a different silicon content and impurity profile, which determines how it can be used.
The main reason buyers look at silicon slag is cost. It can replace ferrosilicon in certain applications while costing significantly less. For plants running general steel grades or cast iron, that price gap is hard to ignore. It lowers raw material costs without giving up the deoxidation performance the process needs.
Silicon has a strong affinity for oxygen, which makes silicon slag effective for both precipitation and diffusion deoxidation. It removes dissolved oxygen from molten steel and helps improve final steel quality. In many general steel grades, silicon slag powder can directly replace ferrosilicon powder. The dosage is adjusted based on its actual silicon and silicon carbide content.
In foundries, silicon slag does more than one job. It raises furnace temperature, improves molten iron fluidity, supports slag removal, and helps increase casting grade and tensile strength. Better fluidity also means cleaner castings with improved toughness and machinability.
Silicon slag can replace silica stone and part of the ferrosilicon in high-silicon manganese alloy smelting. Industrial results show output increases of more than 15%, unit power consumption drops by around 11%, and unit cost falls by roughly 400 yuan per ton.
Silicon slag still contains recoverable silicon particles. These can be extracted and reused. Recent advances have also made it possible to refine high-purity ferrosilicon alloy from solid waste silicon slag through a lower-energy melting process.
