Ferro Silicon Magnesium (FeSiMg) is a specialized ferroalloy serving as the primary nodulizing agent in ductile iron production. This master alloy combines iron, silicon, and magnesium—often with rare earth elements and calcium—to transform flake graphite into spherical graphite nodules during solidification. The result is ductile iron (also called nodular or spheroidal graphite iron) with dramatically improved mechanical properties: 3-5 times higher toughness and 2-3 times higher tensile strength than conventional gray cast iron.

Treatment Methods

In-ladle nodulization remains the most widely used technology globally, with Fe-Si-Mg alloys employed across several established processes:

  • Sandwich Process: Nodulizer placed in a ladle pocket, covered with steel punchings, then molten iron added

  • Plunging (Immersion): Alloy introduced via a refractory bell submerged in the melt

  • Tundish-Cover Process: Covered ladle generates pressure, improving magnesium recovery

  • In-Mold Process: Nodulizer placed directly in the mold cavity

For best results, molten iron sulfur content should not exceed 0.02%—ideally 0.01% or lower—prior to nodulization.
