Ferrosilicon is a fundamental ferroalloy primarily composed of iron and silicon, with tightly controlled low levels of aluminum, calcium, and carbon. Among its various grades, FeSi75 (72%-78% Si) and FeSi72 (70%-75% Si) are the most widely used in the global industry. Renowned for its high melting point, effective deoxidation, and reliable alloying properties, ferrosilicon remains an indispensable material in steelmaking, foundry operations, and other metallurgical applications.

As a critical deoxidizer and alloying agent in steel production, ferrosilicon plays a pivotal role in enhancing final product quality. It efficiently removes dissolved oxygen from molten steel, minimizing oxide inclusions. This process significantly improves the toughness, ductility, and overall mechanical strength of the finished steel. Furthermore, the silicon it introduces helps form wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant microstructures, which are vital for manufacturing special and alloy steels.

Properties & Safety

Physical & Chemical Properties:
Ferrosilicon FeSi75/72 has a density of 6.8-7.2 g/cm³ and a melting point between 1200°C and 1350°C, making it suitable for demanding high-temperature processes. It is insoluble in water but reacts with strong acids. Its strong reducibility at high temperatures is the key to its effectiveness as a deoxidizer, rapidly forming silica (SiO₂) that can be easily removed from the melt.

Safety & Handling Guidelines:
While non-flammable and non-toxic under normal conditions, standard industrial safety practices should be followed.

Primary Applications

  1. Steelmaking Industry: The primary application is as a deoxidizer to remove oxygen, improving steel purity and mechanical properties. It also serves as an alloying agent to increase silicon content, enhancing corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and high-temperature performance in specialty steels (e.g., shipbuilding, boiler plates).

  2. Casting Industry: Used as an inoculant in molten iron to promote fine graphite formation, refining the microstructure of cast iron. This improves the strength and toughness of cast products like engine blocks, brake discs, and pipe fittings.

  3. Magnesium Smelting: Acts as a reducing agent to produce primary magnesium from magnesium oxide (Pidgeon process). It is also used in the production of other ferroalloys like ferromanganese and ferrochrome.

Production Process

Our ferrosilicon is produced via the electric arc furnace smelting process, using high-quality quartz (silica source), iron sources (ore/scrap), and coke (reductant). Raw materials are precisely proportioned, crushed, and fed into the furnace.

Temperatures reaching 1800°C–2000°C facilitate the reduction of silica to silicon, which then alloys with iron. The entire process—from temperature control to raw material ratios—is meticulously managed to ensure consistent quality and yield.

After smelting, the alloy is cast, cooled, crushed, and screened to specification. Each batch undergoes quality inspection before being packaged for secure delivery to our global clients.
